AI in War—From Targeting Tanks to Spreading Lies

Ukrainian attack drones equipped with artificial intelligence are now finding and attacking targets without human assistance.

This is what's been keeping me up at night…

The increasing role of AI in modern warfare.

Trust me, it's a topic that's as intriguing as it is unsettling.

Ukraine is deploying drones equipped with AI, capable of making autonomous decisions to identify and attack targets.

No human intervention needed.

At the same time, AI image detectors are being used to label real war photographs as fake.

The detectors are not always accurate and can be manipulated, adding another layer of complexity to the already grim realities of war.

As Hany Farid pointed out:

It’s a second level of disinformation.
There are dozens of these tools out there.
Half of them say real, half say fake.
There’s not a lot of signal there.

It's a real head-scratcher, isn't it?

On one hand, AI is being used to make warfare more precise, and on the other, it's contributing to the spread of disinformation.

Cracking the Code of Ancient Scrolls with AI

You won't believe what's happening in AI and history.

A 21-year-old computer science student, Luke Farritor, has developed a machine-learning algorithm that can read text inside ancient scrolls from Herculaneum, a Roman city buried by a volcanic eruption in AD 79.

Yep, the same eruption that buried Pompeii!

These scrolls have been a mystery for centuries, but we're finally unlocking their secrets thanks to AI.

When I saw the first image, I was shocked!
It was such a dream.

Federica Nicolardi, a papyrologist at the University of Naples in Italy.

Farritor used machine learning to detect Greek letters on the rolled-up papyrus, revealing words that could revolutionize our understanding of ancient history and literature.

The breakthrough could open hundreds of texts from the only intact library to survive from Greco-Roman antiquity.

Quick Diagnosis, Quicker Treatment by Google

Imagine walking into a doctor's office, and they already know your entire medical history, thanks to AI.

Google Cloud has just announced new AI-powered search capabilities aimed at healthcare workers.

This tool will allow doctors to pull up all sorts of information from clinical notes, scanned documents, and electronic health records, all in one place.

The goal?

To save time and reduce the clerical work that often leads to burnout.

Anything that Google can do by applying our search technologies... I think ultimately benefits us as patients.

➡️ Training data ⬅️

Training data refers to the information or examples used to train a machine learning model. AI models need an extensive training data set to learn patterns and guide their behavior.

Training data is like the practice material we give to computers to make them smart.

It's like teaching a dog tricks with treats. 🐶

The more and better the training data, the smarter the computer becomes at doing its job.
